These workers are being paid as little as $3.25–$3.75/hour, while New York City’s minimum wage is around $16/hour. 

The tech company behind this, Happy Cashier, says it helps restaurants cut labor costs, but labor advocates are calling it a “loophole” that undermines fair wages. 

Customers are still prompted to tip (up to 18%) and some of that goes to the remote cashiers.
