Hundreds of reindeer were recently captured making their dramatic swim across a fjord in northern Norway — an annual migration that’s as breathtaking as it is ancient. Guided by Sámi herders from a small boat, the animals follow the sound of a ringing bell that leads them safely through the icy water toward their winter grazing lands.

Reindeer are built for moments like this: their hollow, buoyant fur keeps them afloat, and they can power through long stretches of open water with surprising speed.
