For the first time in 20 years, satellite data shows that Antarctica's ice sheet has actually gained mass in recent years.

Using GRACE and GRACE-FO gravity measurements, scientists estimate an average increase of 108–119 billion tons per year—slightly reducing global sea level rise by about 0.3 millimetres.

The surprising gain is linked to an unusual burst of snowfall over East Antarctica, temporarily shifting some glaciers from losing ice to gaining it—even as other areas continue to melt due to warming.
