Thelma Melton was a 58-year-old woman who vanished on September 25, 1981, while hiking in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in Tennessee. She was walking on the Deep Creek Trail with her husband and a friend, a trail she knew well and had hiked many times. Near the end of the trail, Thelma suddenly picked up her pace, walking ahead and disappearing over a hill. Her companions expected to find her waiting at the end, but she was gone—and there was no sign of her. Despite extensive searches, including dogs and helicopters, no trace of her was ever found. Her disappearance remains one of the most mysterious and unsettling cases from the park.

In July 2013, Geraldine Largay got lost in the Appalachian mountains. She veered off trail and began texting her husband for help. This is the last photo of her that was taken. She was found over two years later, less than 3,000 feet from the Appalachian Trail. Her texts to her husband read: “in somm trouble,” she texted on July 22, 2013, the day she left the trail. “Got off trail to go to br. now lost. can you call AMC to c if a trail maintainer can help me. somewhere north of woods road.” A day later, she again pleaded for help: “lost since yesterday. off trail 3 or 4 miles. call police for what to do pls.” Her body was found over two years later on October 14th, 2015, less than 3,000 feet from the Appalachian Trail. Her journal revealed she had survived for 26 days.

A devastating natural disaster has deepened Sudan’s already overwhelming humanitarian crisis. On August 31, 2025, a massive landslide, triggered by weeks of relentless heavy rainfall, wiped the village of Tarsin off the map in the Jebel Marra mountains of Darfur. Entire families were buried alive under tons of earth and rock as their homes collapsed in seconds. Initial reports from local authorities and the Sudan Liberation Movement/Army (SLM/A), one of the organizations controlling the region, describe the scene as apocalyptic.
