Farewill, a U.K.-based end-of-life services provider that offers online tools for writing wills, organizing probate, and arranging cremation, has been acquired by funeral service provider Dignity in an all-shares deal valuing the startup at £12.9 million ($16.8 million).

Founded in 2015, Farewill is one of several startups to emerge in a category dubbed “death tech.” This includes apps to memorialize loved ones and social platforms to support the grieving process.

Some have raised significant amounts of venture capital funding, too, such as Empathy which emerged from stealth back in 2021 with $13 million for its digital assistant for bereaved families — going on to raise a further $47 million just a few months ago.

Famitsu reports that Hideo Kojima joins Zootopia 2 as the Japanese voice of Paul Moldebrandt, a mole working at the ZPD. Kojima says he accepted immediately after director Jared Bush personally approached him. He describes the cameo as a small scene but praises the detail of the recording process and says he learned a lot from voice acting. #PeoplesHistory | Today we mark the death anniversary of Fidel Castro Ruz, the leader of the Cuban Revolution and one of the most influential thinkers and political leaders in the history of the Americas.

From building the July 26 Movement, which overthrew the Batista dictatorship, to leading the Cuban revolutionary process through impressive triumphs and seemingly insurmountable challenges, Fidel, through his actions and his thoughts, has inspired millions of people in Latin America and the Caribbean and across the world.

Nine years after his death, we look back at some of the most relevant themes in Fidel Castro’s final writings after stepping down as President of Cuba.

Castro’s final texts always called for organization, for not giving up the strength of will, for continuing to think and work toward another future, one that is not at the mercy of the designs of a few. In short, as Romain Rolland stated and Gramsci popularized, Fidel’s thinking perfectly executed the maxim “Pessimism of the intellect, optimism of the will.”

Researchers at the University of Calgary and Canada’s National Research Council have captured evidence that all living things emit an ultra-faint light, known as biophotons, which disappears at death. Using high-sensitivity cameras, the team recorded photon emissions from mice and plant leaves, revealing a sharp drop once the mice were euthanized, even though their body temperature was maintained.⁠

Biophotons are thought to arise from reactive oxygen species, unstable molecules produced during normal metabolism and stress. When these molecules interact with fats or proteins, electrons shift and release a photon as they return to their resting state. While too weak for the human eye to detect, the emissions fall within visible wavelengths, meaning living organisms literally shimmer on a microscopic scale.⁠

In plants, the glow grew brighter when leaves were physically injured or chemically stressed. Damaged regions shone far more intensely than healthy tissue for hours, underscoring the link between stress and photon output. Similar findings have been observed across a wide range of species and tissues, from bacteria to heart cells, but this study shows the effect in whole organisms with striking clarity.⁠

Biophoton monitoring may provide a non-invasive diagnostic tool, revealing cellular stress in real time across medicine, agriculture, and microbiology. Scientists imagine tracking organ health without surgery, monitoring crop vitality during droughts, or even mapping subtle changes in the brain. The research suggests that the faintest flicker of light could become a powerful new way to measure vitality.⁠
