Back in 2023, a Florida man was arrested after attempting to cross the Atlantic Ocean in a homemade floating contraption that basically looked like a giant hamster wheel.

Coast Guard officials spotted him 70 miles off the Georgia coast, gearing up for a “jog to London,” and quickly declared the vessel “manifestly unsafe.”

Built from buoys, metal bars, and wiring, the so-called “hydro pod” was meant to be powered by—wait for it—running inside of it. He refused to abandon ship, which led to the arrest.

And here’s the wild part: it wasn’t even his first try. He’d attempted similar crossings in 2014, 2016, and 2021, all stopped for safety concerns.

He said his bizarre voyages were meant to raise awareness for causes like homelessness and even the Coast Guard itself.

The trio was discovered in 2001 during a police raid on a drug dealer’s home in Atlanta, Georgia. In the basement, officers found three terrified, underfed cubs suffering from severe parasite infections.

The Georgia DNR transferred the animals to their new 250-acre home at Noah’s Ark Animal Sanctuary (NAAS), a nonprofit rescue in Locust Grove, Georgia. Because the cubs had endured such harsh and damaging conditions, rescuers decided it was safest to keep them together at the sanctuary rather than return them to the wild.

Activists from the anti-war group CODEPINK (@codepinkalert) confronted US President Donald Trump and his cabinet at a restaurant in Washington, DC on September 9. The disruption made national headlines and (evidently) sent the Trump administration into a frenzy.

“What they are doing to this country is really subversive,” Trump said. RICO charges, or charges under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act, were originally intended to combat organized crime. But in an unprecedented move, they have been deployed against 61 activists who opposed the construction of a multi-million dollar police training facility in Atlanta, known as “Cop City” by Georgia’s Attorney General Chris Carr. After a legal battle of 2 years, the charges were finally dismissed a few days ago.

Zinc, one of Earth’s most abundant and affordable metals, is emerging as a surprising rival to lithium in the battery world. Recent breakthroughs suggest zinc-ion batteries could last far longer, charge faster, and operate more safely than their lithium counterparts.⁠

At the Technical University of Munich, researchers created a protective layer for zinc anodes using a porous polymer called TpBD-2F. This ultra-thin coating forms nano-sized channels that guide zinc ions while repelling water, stopping the growth of dendrites—tiny metal spikes that usually destroy zinc batteries. The result is astonishing: cells that can cycle more than 100,000 times, potentially lasting decades in large-scale energy storage.⁠

Meanwhile, a team at Georgia Tech flipped conventional wisdom on its head. Where lithium batteries degrade under fast charging, zinc-ion batteries improved. High charging currents actually prevented dendrites, forcing zinc to deposit in smooth, compact layers. Using custom imaging tools, the researchers watched this behavior in real time, proving that fast charging can make zinc batteries not only safe but longer-lived.⁠

Together, these advances position zinc-ion technology as a strong contender for powering solar and wind storage, backup systems for homes and hospitals, and grid stabilization projects. Unlike lithium, zinc is cheap, widely mined, nonflammable, and easy to recycle—qualities that make it a strong candidate for the green energy transition.⁠

With further refinement of cathode materials and scaling to industrial production, zinc-ion batteries could soon stand at the center of a cleaner, more resilient power grid.⁠
