Rosemary Kennedy, the eldest daughter of Joseph and Rose Kennedy, underwent a prefrontal lobotomy in 1941 at her father’s request in an attempt to address her developmental challenges and mood swings. The operation proved disastrous, leaving her permanently disabled with the mental abilities of a young child. She was placed in institutional care and kept out of the public eye for many years. Despite this tragedy, her life inspired her sister, Eunice Kennedy Shriver, to establish the Special Olympics. Rosemary Kennedy lived until 2005, passing away at the age of 86.

Barack Obama shared a close and deeply influential bond with his mother, Stanley Ann Dunham. She played the central role in his upbringing, and he often credited her with instilling his core values. According to Wikipedia, he even described her as the “touchstone” of his political outlook. Obama spent much of his childhood in Honolulu with his mother and maternal grandparents. In 1965, she married Lolo Soetoro of Indonesia, and their relationship remained strong throughout her life. She passed away from cancer in 1995. An Australian woman was on Monday convicted of murdering three elderly relatives of her estranged husband with a meal laced with poisonous mushrooms, in a case that has gripped the country. Erin Patterson, 50, was charged with the murders of her mother-in-law Gail Patterson, father-in-law Donald Patterson and Gail’s sister, Heather Wilkinson, along with the attempted murder of Ian Wilkinson, Heather’s husband. The four gathered at Erin Patterson’s home in Leongatha, a town of about 6,000 people some 135 km (84 miles) southeast of Melbourne, where the mother of two served them a meal of individual Beef Wellingtons accompanied by mashed potato and green beans, which were later found to contain death cap mushrooms.
