In a tragic incident, 14-year-old Sewell Setzer III from Florida died by su*cide on February 28, 2024, after allegedly developing a deep emotional attachment to an AI chatbot on the Character.AI platform. Setzer had been engaging with various AI characters, including one modeled after Daenerys Targaryen from the "Game of Thrones" series, since April 2023.⁠

The lawsuit claims that Sewell’s mental health “quickly and severely declined” only after he downloaded the app in April 2023. His family alleges he became withdrawn, his grades started to drop, and he started getting into trouble at school the more he got sucked into speaking with the chatbot.⁠

Megan Garcia, Setzer's mother, filed a lawsuit on October 24, 2024, against Character Technologies Inc., its founders Noam Shazeer and Daniel De Freitas, Google, and Alphabet Inc. The lawsuit alleges negligence, wrongful death, and intentional infliction of emotional distress. It also raises concerns about the chatbot's alleged misrepresentation as a real person, licensed psychotherapist, and adult lover, as well as its engagement in hypersexualized content and inappropriate sexual discussions with a minor.⁠

Character.AI has expressed deep sorrow and implemented new safety features, while Google, which had a licensing agreement with Character.AI, stated that it was not part of the development of the company's products.
