Japanese designer Yasuhiro Suzuki crafted a striking zipper-shaped boat that appears to “unzip” the water as it moves. Known as the “Zip-Fastener Ship,” the vessel was featured in an art installation called Opening the River during DESIGNART Tokyo 2020. Measuring 9 meters long, the boat is designed with a chrome-colored body, complete with a bridge and puller to mimic the look of a real zipper. As it travels along Tokyo’s Sumida River, its wake creates the illusion of the water being unzipped, visually linking the riverbanks. Suzuki drew inspiration for the concept while viewing Tokyo Bay from an airplane, where a ship’s path through the water reminded him of a zipper opening.
