Farewill, a U.K.-based end-of-life services provider that offers online tools for writing wills, organizing probate, and arranging cremation, has been acquired by funeral service provider Dignity in an all-shares deal valuing the startup at £12.9 million ($16.8 million). Founded in 2015, Farewill is one of several startups to emerge in a category dubbed “death tech.” This includes apps to memorialize loved ones and social platforms to support the grieving process. Some have raised significant amounts of venture capital funding, too, such as Empathy which emerged from stealth back in 2021 with $13 million for its digital assistant for bereaved families — going on to raise a further $47 million just a few months ago. After the 9/11 attacks, Russia presented the United States with a monument known as the Tear Drop Memorial, which now stands in Bayonne, New Jersey. Designed by Russian artist Zurab Tsereteli, it was dedicated in 2006 during a ceremony attended by both American and Russian officials. The structure rises roughly 100 feet, featuring a dramatic split through the center that frames a large stainless-steel teardrop hanging between two bronze panels. At its base, granite plaques list the names of the victims from both the 2001 attacks and the 1993 World Trade Center bombing. Veteran anime director Tatsuya Nagamine has passed away at 53 after an undisclosed illness, with the news becoming public in November following a memorial held by Toei Animation. Addison Bethea, 17, was scalloping in about five feet of water near Grassy Island, close to Keaton Beach, Florida, when she was suddenly attacked by a shark! Recalling advice she’d seen on Animal Planet—to punch a shark in the nose during an attack—she tried to fight back, but couldn’t reach its head due to how it had bitten her. Her brother, Rhett Willingham, 22, a firefighter and emergency medical technician in Taylor County, sprang into action. He jumped into the water and repeatedly punched and kicked the shark until it released Addison. Once she was free, he pulled her onto his boat. Addison sustained serious injuries and was airlifted approximately 80 miles to Tallahassee Memorial Hospital, where she was listed in critical condition. In an extraordinary act of compassion, a remote Maasai community in Kenya offered 14 of their most valued cows to the United States in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks. The idea came from Wilson Kimeli Naiyomah, a Maasai elder who was studying in New York at the time and witnessed the tragedy firsthand. When he shared his experience with his people, they were moved to give what was most sacred to them. In Maasai tradition, cattle are seen as the very essence of life, making their gift a powerful symbol of solidarity. Although U.S. import restrictions prevented the cows from being physically transferred, they were honored through a memorial program and still flourish in Kenya today. To commemorate the gesture, two symbolic paintings were created—one of which is displayed in the 9/11 Memorial & Museum.
