  • In 1967, Kathrine Switzer made history as the first woman to officially run the Boston Marathon. To slip past the ban on female competitors, she registered under the initials “K.V. Switzer,” disguising her gender.

Partway through the race, official Jock Semple tried to forcefully pull her off the course. But with the support of her boyfriend and fellow runners, Switzer broke free and pressed on, determined to finish. She did—and her finish line moment became iconic.

Her daring run sparked a movement for women’s inclusion in long-distance running. By 1972, just five years later, women were finally permitted to compete officially in the Boston Marathon.

  • During Toyotathon?!

Amazon expanded into online car sales with the launch of Amazon Autos, an e-commerce business that lets customers find, order, and buy new cars, trucks, and SUVs from dealerships.

Amazon is kicking off the new endeavor with Hyundai in 48 U.S. cities, including Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, and New York.

Amazon Autos will function, in many ways, like the rest of the broader Amazon e-commerce ecosystem. Shoppers will be able to search for available vehicles from participating dealers by model, trim, color, and features. Notably, customers will also be able to secure financing and e-sign paperwork via the Amazon Autos site.

Once the payment is finalized, customers can schedule when to pick up their vehicle from that dealership.

  • When Boston Dynamics’ robot dogs hit the America’s Got Talent stage, the crowd didn’t expect a showstopper — quite literally.

Four robots wowed with a high-energy routine to Queen’s Don’t Stop Me Now, but one froze mid-dance, stealing attention with its glitch.

The rest powered through flawlessly, earning a roaring ovation and four “yes” votes. Judge Simon Cowell even praised the hiccup, calling it a reminder that even cutting-edge tech can surprise us.

  • A friendly hitchhiking robot learned that human kindness has its limits. After successfully hitchhiking more than 10,000 kilometers across Canada, Germany, and the Netherlands, HitchBOT - a $1,000 social experiment built from household items - was found dismembered in Philadelphia, just two weeks into its American journey

The child-sized robot attended weddings, football games, danced at festivals, visited castles, and even toured with a heavy metal band during its international adventures. Equipped with GPS, basic conversation abilities, and Wikipedia knowledge, HitchBOT charmed its way through multiple countries while documenting its journey through random photos every 20 minutes.

However, just two weeks into its American journey, after visiting Boston's Fenway Park and New York's Times Square, HitchBOT was found decapitated and dismembered on Philadelphia's historic Elfreth's Alley. Its creators, Dr. Frauke Zeller and Dr. David Harris Smith, declined to press charges, stating they "wish to remember the good times."

The project aimed to reverse the typical question of whether humans can trust robots by asking instead if robots could trust humans. While HitchBOT's journey ended prematurely, it sparked global discussions about human nature, trust, and our relationship with technology.
