The moment captured in the famous Pulitzer Prize–winning photograph Burst of Joy adds a darker layer of contrast to its seemingly euphoric scene. Taken in 1973, the image shows Air Force Lt. Col. Robert L. Stirm stepping off a plane after years as a Vietnam POW, greeted by his wife and children in what appeared to be a perfect homecoming. Yet behind the photo’s jubilant energy was a painful reality: while Stirm was imprisoned, his wife, Loretta, had begun multiple extramarital affairs and had already decided to end the marriage before he even returned.

Not long after the photograph was taken, Loretta delivered a “Dear John” letter, confirming the infidelity and her intention to leave him. Their divorce became widely discussed because of the lopsided outcome: reports at the time noted that she had spent a substantial amount of his military pay during his captivity, continued to receive a significant portion of his benefits afterward, and was granted full custody of their children in court.

Step aside ChatGPT

On Thursday Google launched an iOD app for its AI-powered assistant globally. Until now, iOS users either had to use the Google app or mobile web to chat with the AI technology.

The new Gemini iOS app supports text-based prompts in 35 languages. Plus, users can have a conversation with Gemini through its Gemini Live feature in 12 languages, including English, Spanish, French, German, Hindi, Portuguese, Arabic, Italian, Indonesian, Japanese, Turkish and Vietnamese. Google said it aims to introduce support for additional languages soon.

While some of the other features of Gemini, such as asking it to suggest recipes or seeking help for studies, were already available through the Google app and mobile web, Gemini Live is a new addition to the native iOS app.
