  • Amazon has announced an additional $4 billion investment in Anthropic, the San Francisco-based AI startup behind the Claude chatbot.

This additional funding brings Amazon’s total investment in the company to $8 billion. Despite this, Amazon remains a minority investor and does not have a seat on Anthropic’s board, reflecting limited control over the startup’s strategic decisions.

As part of the partnership, Amazon Web Services (AWS) will serve as Anthropic’s primary cloud and training provider. Anthropic will utilize AWS’s Trainium and Inferentia chips to train and deploy its advanced AI models.

The investment highlights Amazon’s strategy of supporting AI startups while strengthening its in-house generative AI capabilities. This move aligns Amazon with competitors like Google, which has invested $2 billion in Anthropic and holds a 10% stake.

  • Google has invested heavily in Anthropic, holding a 14% stake in the AI start-up, according to legal filings. This investment is part of Google’s broader strategy to maintain its competitive edge in the AI sector by investing in promising start-ups.

While Google’s ownership is capped at 15% and it has no voting rights or board influence, it continues to pour money into the company. In September, it plans to invest another $750 million through convertible debt, adding to its total investment of over $3 billion.

Anthropic, founded in 2021 by former OpenAI executives Dario and Daniela Amodei, positions itself as an AI safety-focused company.

Despite major investments from tech giants like Google and Amazon, which have collectively put in over $10 billion, Anthropic has structured itself to avoid being controlled by any single company.

  • Artisan just raised a $25 million Series A led by Glade Brook Capital, 23-year-old CEO Jaspar Carmichael-Jack exclusively tells TechCrunch.

Artisan is one of a bevy of fast-growing startups in the highly watched AI sales development representative (AI SDR) market. It’s probably best known for its “Stop Hiring Humans” marketing campaign that has generated many news articles, social media posts, comments, and a few death threats, says the company.

On April 1, Carmichael-Jack even announced his “resignation” in response to the backlash, saying he was being replaced by an “AI CEO.” It was an April’s Fool joke and Carmichael-Jack is still very much CEO.

More seriously, when asked if he truly believes that AI will replace people, Carmichael-Jack says, “No, which is ironic, because we did the billboards that said, ‘stop hiring humans’ but that was mostly just for attention.”

  • Perplexity doesn’t just want to compete with Google, it apparently wants to be Google.

CEO Aravind Srinivas said this week on the TBPN podcast that one reason Perplexity is building its own browser is to collect data on everything users do outside of its own app. This so it can sell premium ads.

“That’s kind of one of the other reasons we wanted to build a browser, is we want to get data even outside the app to better understand you,” Srinivas said. “Because some of the prompts that people do in these AIs is purely work-related. It’s not like that’s personal.”

Srinivas believes that Perplexity’s browser users will be fine with such tracking because the ads should be more relevant to them.

“We plan to use all the context to build a better user profile and, maybe you know, through our discover feed we could show some ads there,” he said.

The browser, named Comet, suffered setbacks but is on track to be launched in May, Srinivas said.

  • Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei published an essay highlighting how little researchers understand about the inner workings of the world’s leading AI models.

To address that, Amodei set an ambitious goal for Anthropic to reliably detect most AI model problems by 2027.

Amodei acknowledges the challenge ahead. In “The Urgency of Interpretability,” the CEO says Anthropic has made early breakthroughs in tracing how models arrive at their answers — but emphasizes that far more research is needed to decode these systems as they grow more powerful.

“I am very concerned about deploying such systems without a better handle on interpretability,” Amodei wrote in the essay.

“These systems will be absolutely central to the economy, technology, and national security, and will be capable of so much autonomy that I consider it basically unacceptable for humanity to be totally ignorant of how they work.”

  • Artisan, a San Francisco-based AI startup, has raised $25 million in Series A funding led by Glade Brook Capital, with participation from Y Combinator, Day One Ventures, HubSpot Ventures, and others.

The announcement was made by 23-year-old CEO Jaspar Carmichael-Jack, who co-founded the startup with Sam Stallings, a former IBM product manager.

Known for its provocative “Stop Hiring Humans” campaign, Artisan clarified that its goal is to augment human work by automating repetitive tasks, rather than replacing employees entirely. Despite the slogan, the startup currently employs 35 people and plans to hire 22 more across various roles.

Artisan operates in the AI SDR (sales development representative) space, offering AI agents like Ava to generate cold outreach messages. The startup also plans to expand its product line with Aaron, for handling inbound messages, and Aria, a meeting assistant — both expected by the end of 2025.

  • Cancer ranks as one of the top causes of death worldwide.

The National Cancer Institute reported nearly 20 million new cancer cases and 9.7 million cancer-related deaths globally in 2022, with projections showing a rise to 29.9 million new cases by 2040.

Craif, spun off from Nagoya University in Japan in 2018, is using microRNA(miRNA) to develop an AI-powered early cancer detection software, and it has raised $22 million in Series C funding to expand further into the U.S. market and bolster its R&D.

Ryuichi Onose, co-founder and CEO of Craif, told TechCrunch in an interview that the company completed its Series C funding round with a valuation of just under $100 million.

Craif aims to address gaps in the cancer testing industry by providing a non-invasive urine-based test that enables early cancer detection, even at a very early stage, like at Stage 1.
