Currently, only 0.1% of global hydrogen is “green,” due to the high cost of renewable production. In a new study, the researchers identified geological environments where natural hydrogen might exist in large quantities—potentially enough to power society for 170,000 years, though not all of it is accessible or economically viable. To aid exploration, the team developed a “recipe” for locating extractable hydrogen, which requires three conditions: the presence of hydrogen, suitable reservoir rocks, and a seal to trap the gas. They also highlight the need to avoid microbes that consume hydrogen underground. Promising areas include Kansas and Albania, where significant reserves may be trapped in ancient geologic formations. The team, who also study hidden helium reserves, founded Snowfox Discovery to pursue commercial exploration of natural hydrogen and helium, which they believe exist in abundant quantities beneath the Earth’s surface.
